VANCOUVER, B.C. They have been a large time coming, but electric vehicles are just around the corner.
Some hurdles remain, but the majority have been tackled and this convenience life next year we will see regular production vehicles on the streets (some streets) in Canada. The first to reach that milestone will be the Nissan Leaf.
Nissan showed the zero-emission Leaf to the media here on the only Canadian leave off during a 22-city North American tour. Vancouver was selected because Nissan has struck an ahead with the City of Vancouver and B C Hydro to supply support and infrastructure.
The first of a fleet of Leafs will arrive in the Olympic burg this fall. Wider fleet use will follow in 2011 and public sales begin in 2012
The Leaf is a conclude car, a compact five-passenger, four-door sedan designed from the ground up for this purpose. It will have a climate control and seamanship system in addition to the normal features and amenities.
Nissan had a prototype on hand but not a working model. We could sit in and look around but driving was restricted to a probe mule made up of a heavily-modified Versa containing the drive-train components that will propel the Leaf.
