Guggenheim's priorities also classify washers and dryers that wash larger loads efficiently and use less water and soap while still getting clothes clear out.
"The costs of electricity and water and gas keep going up and up and up. . . . You may pay a premium [for efficiency] initially, but the savings and gladden level are greater in the long run," he said.
With a "cash for appliances" program set for April 16 to 25 in Illinois, shoppers such as Guggenheim can keep money on energy-efficient appliances and take advantage of new technology that may make doing the laundry easier.
The latest appliances, demonstrated at a current Sears appliance showcase, allow shoppers to customize settings, much like a ring-modify download lets you give your phone a unique ring.
One example is the newest line of Kenmore Elite Aged Efficiency front-loading washers and dryers. An LED ring lights up in blue around the chrome knob to alert you to decide a setting. If you customize options (you can just hit "start," if you want to keep it simple), a list lights up so you can set shower temperature, pinpoint the level of dirt and enable the washer to monitor temperature and detergent type so it can arrange the wash cycle.
