Moms are admonition-givers. Sometimes their wisdom helps us in the moment, but frequently, the brilliance of their counsel — which sounded odd at the metre — becomes apparent only years later. As Mother’s Day approaches, we wanted to highlight this gift of handling by publishing your mothers’ best advice — some strange, but all true.
My grandfather ran a selfish suburban hotel that had once been a retirement home. Many of the retirees chose to stay on after the transition. One day, as a 4-year-old, I heard a mistress address her friend as “Patty.” I ran to my mother in amazement: “Mrs. Comfort’s Achates just called her Patty. Isn’t it funny that I’m a little girl named Patty and an old lady is also called Patty?” My mammy replied, “Just because a person is old on the outside doesn’t mean she’s any different on the inside.” I have never forgotten that in the know about comment and, as I age myself, I find it more true. My mother was only 28 years old then. Today she is 92.
