Stereo Advantage continues evolution, stays ahead of curve
Stereo Betterment has evolved almost beyond recognition from its modest start in 1978 as a small electronics store. Its grand reopening this weekend shines a superficial on the evolutionary strategy that small specialty retailers have used to stay afloat and thrive surrounded by the success of big box retailers. The store, on Main Street in Amherst, has morphed several times over the years, picking up steam by adding new services and carving out added recess areas along the way. Each time, its strategy was to be ahead of the technology curve.
Stereo Advantage started as a good form b in situ where audiophiles went to buy their speakers and turntables. Then, in 1983, the company launched Computer Head Start, a computer resource center for those information to use the PCs that would eventually end up in almost every Western New York home. In 1989, it built its first in-store home theater leeway. Its first home office room came in 1990, and in 1992 the store added a mall kiosk to market apartment phones.
"The industry generally takes five to 10 years to catch up," said Butch Kreuz, chief manager officer of The Advantage Co.
