Action 9: Woman Seeks Refund For Pricey Vacuum WSOCtv.com

Joann Patterson, 70, has a vacuum cleaner she says is too sore to for her to use.

"If I had to pick it up and take it across the room, I couldn't pick it up," she said.

She said a door-to-door salesperson convinced her to buy the Kirby vacuum cleaner by vacuuming her mattress and then letting the cat out of the bag her she had dust mites.

"She said, This is dust mites. This will kill you. This will give you emphysema," Patterson said.

Joann said she felt pressured by the shop-girl and the four-person sales team along with her. She then wrote a check on the spot for nearly $1,000.

Two weeks later, Joann realized she made a misread and called the Kirby distribution manager, who told her she couldn't cancel.

"He said the contract is final. I said I didn't conscious what I was buying . I didn't know it was that heavy," she said.

Also, Joann admits she didn't pay attention to the three-day abrogation deadline in her contract.

Are Kirby vacuum cleaners worth the price? What do you think about Kirby vacuums?

I had never heard of Kirby until the other tenebriousness when a couple of Kirby salesman came to my door asking if I wanted to have my carpets cleaned for free.

I won't go into the details about Kirby's sales techniques... which I do find unappealing... but I'm interested if anybody out there has bought a Kirby vacuum and if you think it's worth the price.

I can tell you that they were asking more than $1,800 for the newest archetype (the Sentria). The lowest they would go was $1180. I never knew vacuums could cost so much! And I passed on the offer -- even though the vacuum was truly impressive.

I be versed they are expensive but I've had mine for 15yrs and have had no problems with it. This should tell you that they are good vacuums....=)

Yes. I have one and I will never have to buy another vacuum or rug cleaner again.

Think of it! That is so crazy. I spent 500 on a Dyson and it is amazing!

Kirby vacuums are terrible but save yourself some money and get a Dyson. They work just as well (if not better!) and are cheaper.

I have one my indulge bought about 25-30 years ago and an even older one I got free that was being discarded. They do last forever as both still run fine, but they are heavy and don't exertion any better than other quality vacuums in the $3-500 range, which is a lot less than they are asking. Save some money, plus the salesmen are intrinsic cheese balls as you mentioned.

We bought a second-hand '94 Kirby in 1996. We paid $400. for it. I like the powerful suction, but it also comes with drawbacks.

The following are my opinions about this Kirby:

1. I don't like the tariff of replacing the filters (they're about $8. a bag and only have 3 bags in a package.

2. It's not easy to change from vacuum to using the hose.

3. It's affectionate of heavy and bulky and doesn't maneuver easily.

In my opinion, it's not worth it. You can leverage a bagless Dyson for around $500. and they work great.

Does the $1800. price include all of the attachments?
Do you destitution all those attachments?
Are all the bells & whistles worth $1800.?

I animate where Kirby's are manufactured and it will be the last vacuum you ever have to buy.. My mother-in-law got a refurbished one for a wedding gift and it STILL runs over 30 yrs. later.. Her nurse-in-law has one as a wedding gift over 60 yrs. ago and it STILL runs as well.. They get them rebuilt for around $20 a year so it's like getting a new vacuum... I'm not confident about the newer ones.. I haven't seen them, I do know the old one's practically run forever. In reality we used them when I was in college to vacuum our dorm rooms... Good luck

I own a kirby g-6 and let me hillock ya...NEVER..EVER...again! they are not worth the price. I have a german shedder aka german shepherd and it can not handle the hair. the bags set someone back me $5 a piece, belts $2 a piece cleaning solution is over $30 bucks and in my impression doesn't clean a carpet for crap and heaven help ya if you have to replace a part$$$...impartial my opinion.

My son in-law sold Kirby's. The sales tear into determine is impressive, especially about sweeping away dust mites. Are they worth the price, don't create so. They are to heavy and you'll never use half those attachments.

I be familiar with they are expensive but I've had mine for 15yrs and have had no problems with it. This should tell you that they are good vacuums....=)

Hi,

I was offered for $900 and I have bargained further but it didn't fly, so I characterize as $900 is the best price we can pay.

Do Kirby vacuum cleaners really live up to the hype?

Have any of you had a newer Kirby vacuum cleaner (the one the representatives say cleans all the way to the disclose floor) and could you compare it's performance to other "store" brands? I'm not remarkably interested in value (I know they are terribly expensive) but want to know if they really do clean as advertised. I moved into a new lodgings with some dirty carpets and a friend of mine offered to let me borrow her Kirby vacuum cleaner with built in carpet shampooer and I hope for to know how well it will clean. Is the shampooer equal to one I could rent at Wal-Mart or another store? Thanks for the help!

They are a positive vacuum cleaner, but if a sales person does the test with the white filter and runs it over your carpet to show how much more the Kirby will pick up, you could put a wan filter on your sweepe and still pick up dirt reguardless of what kind of sweeper it is. Kirby does hold up well and the belts are veritably easy to change, but I'm sure you can find other brands that are alot cheaper that will also do a good job. I have four pets, two enormous danes and two dachshuncs and I have a Phantom Thunder that does a good job. I have also heard that Dyson is a great vac too and I invent that if my Phantom ever wears out that is what I will get....I like to use the rug doctor to shampoo carpets with as they do a great job and the carpets dry speedily. You could probably purchas a rug doctor on line and buy a Dyson and still be ahead cash wise as rug doctor sells refurbished shampooers on thread....good luck with your choice.....

Are Kirby vacuum cleaners really as good as they say they are?

I had a manifestation once and the Kirby vacumm did seem to be sucking the dirt up from not only the rugs but also under the floorboards! I was amazed to say the least. But I'd like to know what the owners of them weigh. Tell me all about the good and bad sides of this vacuum. Thanks :)

From Consumer's Reports:

Surprisingly -- stated this vacuum's dismal door-to-door reputation -- Consumer Reports includes the Kirby Sentria in its latest roundup of vacuum cleaners, in which models are tested for their discharge on carpeting and hard floors. This is fair enough, but a quick look at some other sources, including Yahoo! Answers and The Ripoff Piece, sheds some much-needed light on Kirby's operating procedures.

Reviewers say the Kirby Sentria is good at cleaning carpeting and calamitous floors -- as you'd expect from a $1,000-plus vacuum. But reviewers also say that it's noisy, gloomy and hard to push. Other vacuums are smaller, lighter and less expensive, plus they clean every bit as well. Salespeople cite Kirby's ductility cleaning upholstery and curtains, but some owners complain that the heavy 25-pound weight limits its benefit.

Kirby Sentria review highlights

What the reviewers like:
The Kirby Sentria vacuum does a good job cleaning carpeting and tough floors, and it has useful tools and minimal emissions.

What the reviewers don't like:
Considering its figure, reviews say the Kirby Sentria is unusually noisy, heavy and hard to push. Furthermore, experts and owners akin to frown on Kirby's high-pressure, door-to-door sales tactics.

****
Kirby owners are true. But then so are Electrolux and Miele owners. You need to do some serious reading...and may actually have to join Consumer's Account via web (you can do it by the month...I just did for a dryer) for more reading.
