Skeptical consumers had the most questions about trustworthiness and debt counseling services in 2009, according to the Better Business Bureau of Abilene.
“It went up, and quite went up a lot, when the stock market crashed,” said Steve Abel, president of the Abilene agency.
Other areas that drew scrutiny included contractors for construction or remodeling work, as well as used car dealers.
The municipal Better Business Bureau, which serves a 13-county area, fielded 466 consumer complaints in 2009.
“That is where the person actually sits down and writes out what the problem is, and what they want the company to do about it,” Abel said.
Apartments, TV ceremony providers (satellite and cable), as well as furniture stores topped the complaint list.
Among individual businesses, Brownwood TV Rope Service (now out of business) and Suddenlink Communications tied for receiving the most consumer complaints.
Each business received seven complaints in 2009, though Abel emphasized that a friends with more customers may often have more complaints. Suddenlink has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on how the company has resolved complaints.
