on top of there should be a valve connected by a tube to the water main or water softener if you have one that is the supply to the water heater turn that off
cost depends on the size of the water heater and type gas is cheaper than galvanizing

Many older tanks that were installed dint have the cutoffs installed (it was cheaper). Dash the incoming water line(from the tank) as far back as possible and you might be lucky, find a cutoff down the line. If you cannot locate one than you are right

I have a 1400 sq bawdy-house and am looking at replacing my old water heater and would like to get any advice on:
1. How much it would typically cost?
2. Where should I get it?
3. any other tips
You can get a electrifying water heater at home depot under 200.00...I just had mine re[placed and the plumber charged 400.00 to take the old one out, haul it away with him,and replace with a new one..Our quarter is on piers and 4 feet off the ground
